Alkaline Acid Balance and Health

Maintaining a diet of the proper alkaline acid balance is important for staying healthy and disease free. Acid is known to weaken and irritate body tissue. In general, the human body is mostly alkaline. It is about 80% alkaline and 20% acid, and it is important to consume a diet that reflects these percentages.

However, most people consume too many foods in the acid category and fail to eat enough alkaline foods. This contributes to poor health. The body simply cannot function properly when the alkaline and acid are out of balance. Symptoms of alkaline acid imbalances in the body may include fatigue, irritability, digestive disorders, aches, pains, and cramps.  Long-term, severe alkaline acid imbalances are believed to be a significant contributing factor to chronic diseases, such as cancer.

Alkaline Foods For optimum health, fill your body with healthy, alkaline foods. Alkaline foods help prevent disease and slow down the aging process. Alkaline foods will help you live a longer life. Alkaline foods are mainly plant foods such as broccoli, carrots, greens, beans, garlic, and tomatoes.  Other nutritious alkaline foods are watermelons, pears, pineapples, cherries, honeydew, plums and other fruits. People maintaining a vegan or vegetarian diet are closer to keeping the proper alkaline acid balance in their bodies. They are generally healthier and live longer than people following typical eating habits.

Acid Foods Foods that form acid in the body include protein, grains, sugar, and processed foods. These food items, especially meats, need to be eaten in moderation.  Acid producing beverages include coffee, tea, and alcohol, so limit your intake of these substances. In addition, try to avoid stress because it causes the body to become more acidic.

Creating Balance In addition to eating appropriate foods based on an 80% alkaline 20% acid balance, there are other ways to create balance in the body. One way is to get adequate sunlight. Sunlight enriches and supports the alkaline in the body, whereas a lack of sunlight can lead to acid accumulation in the body. Drinking a sufficient amount of water is another way to create more alkaline in the body. Drink at least 8 glasses of pure water each day.

It is essential to maintain an alkaline acid balance in your body for proper functioning, health, and longevity. Diet is the most important factor for creating the balance. Thus, eating a plant based diet is a major key for avoiding illness and living a healthy life.
